The story

Sibu International Dance Festival in Sibu

The Sibu International Dance Festival brings dance troupes from Sarawak, Indonesia, the Philippines and beyond to the riverside town of Sibu each September. First staged in 2012 and now in its second decade, the week-long event blends indigenous, folk, line and contemporary dance across outdoor and indoor venues, drawing several hundred performers for competitions, showcases and community dance classes.

Sibu is a river port town on the Rajang, Sarawak's longest river, known historically as a trading hub for the region's Iban, Melanau, Foochow Chinese and other communities.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

SIDF stands out among Malaysian dance events for its international competitive component, pulling in troupes from across Southeast Asia to compete and perform alongside Sarawakian indigenous dance groups

02

The mystery stays covered

Its International Indigenous Dance Nights give Borneo's own dance traditions a formal international stage, while parallel Zumba masterclasses and children's showcases widen participation beyond trained performers

03

The city starts moving

Staging the festival across both the open-air Sibu Esplanade and an indoor hotel ballroom lets organizers run large-scale outdoor spectacle alongside more intimate technical competition categories in the same week
