The story

Pesta Benak Sri Aman in Sri Aman

Pesta Benak, the Tidal Bore Festival, gathers the town of Sri Aman on Sarawak's Batang Lupar River to watch and ride the benak, a tidal wave that can rise roughly three metres as the incoming spring tide is funnelled upstream. About 200 kilometres from Kuching, the festival pairs this natural spectacle with boat races, kayaking, cultural pageants, concerts and riverside night markets.

Sri Aman sits on a bend of the Batang Lupar River in Sarawak, where a funnel-shaped river mouth produces one of the most reliable tidal bores in Southeast Asia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The benak is one of only a handful of surfable tidal bores anywhere, formed where the funnel-shaped mouth of the Batang Lupar compresses incoming seawater into a standing wave that can travel far upstream

02

The mystery stays covered

Surfers time their runs to the lunar cycle since the wave only reaches full height during spring tides

03

The city starts moving

Around this rare hydrological event, Sri Aman builds a full civic celebration: a regatta of traditional longboats, the Miss Tourism Benak and Ratu Kebaya Benak pageants, concert stages for Malaysian performers, and food and trade stalls selling Iban and Malay specialties, closing with a fireworks display over the river
