Festival de Kirina in Kirina
Festival de Kirina is staged at Kirina, the historic site of the 1235 Battle of Kirina, in which Sundiata Keita defeated Sumanguru Kante to found the Mali Empire. The festival commemorates this foundational episode of Mande history through griot storytelling, music and dance performances tied to the empire's founding legend, preserved across centuries in the orally transmitted Sundiata epic.
The Battle of Kirina, fought in 1235, marks one of the most significant turning points in West African history: the victory of Sundiata Keita over Sumanguru Kante, an outcome that led directly to the founding of the Mali Empire, which would go on to become one of the largest and wealthiest states in medieval West Africa.
