Festival International du Wassoulou in Yanfolila
Festival International du Wassoulou is held in Yanfolila, at the heart of the Wassoulou region of southern Mali that produced international stars such as Oumou Sangare. The festival showcases Wassoulou music, a pentatonic, hunter-influenced genre built around the donso ngoni, or hunter's harp, and the region's distinctive vocal style, drawing performers connected to Wassoulou's musical roots in the Sikasso and Yanfolila areas.
Wassoulou music sits apart from the griot-dominated soundscape that defines much of Malian music.
