The story

Festghana in Floriana

Festghana celebrates ghana, Malta's improvised traditional folk singing recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, over four days each spring across Argotti Gardens in Floriana and Gnien l-Ghannejja in Zejtun. The festival pairs Maltese ghana singers and guitarists with international folk acts, closing with a communal ftira meal and a banda procession through Floriana's historic streets.

For generations before recorded music reached Malta's villages, an evening's entertainment in a bar or a farmyard often meant two or three men trading verses of ghana, each singer improvising a rhyming reply to the last, guitar keeping a steady rhythm underneath.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Ghana is a spontaneous, call-and-response style of sung poetry historically performed by farmers, fishermen and workers in village squares and bars, and Festghana is one of the few festivals built entirely around keeping that living oral tradition visible to new audiences rather than treating it as a museum piece

02

The mystery stays covered

Its 'Gejjin bil-Banda' opening, in which Banda Vilhena marches through Floriana to announce the festival, echoes the way village feasts are traditionally heralded, while inviting international folk performers such as Serbian group Gusle alongside local ghannejja underlines how ghana sits within a wider Mediterranean and global tradition of improvised sung verse

Getting around

Plan routes around set times, late-night exits, and crowded transport after headline acts.

What to wear

Casual outdoor wear suited to warm spring evenings in a garden setting; Argotti Gardens has uneven paths and shaded areas, so comfortable flat shoes are best. No particular modesty...

Safety

Keep phone power, water, and a clear meeting point sorted before the main crowd arrives.
