Feast of Santa Marija Ghaxaq in Ghaxaq
The Feast of Santa Marija, celebrated on 15 August in Ghaxaq, a small town in southern Malta, marks the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with a statue procession, decorated streets and church, band marches and fireworks. It is one of several Santa Marija feasts held simultaneously across the islands, giving this quieter southern town its own dedicated version of the widely shared celebration.
Ghaxaq sits in Malta's southern countryside, a small town whose parish church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, gives its community a shared date each 15 August with several larger and more famous Maltese towns also celebrating Santa Marija on the same day.
