The story

Rolex Middle Sea Race in Grand Harbour

The Rolex Middle Sea Race is a 606 nautical mile offshore sailing race that has started from Valletta's Grand Harbour since being conceived in 1968, sending its fleet anticlockwise around Sicily, past Mount Etna, the Straits of Messina, Stromboli and the Egadi Islands, south past Lampedusa, and back to Malta. The 47th edition starts on 17 October 2026, with the free public start viewable from Valletta's bastions and Barrakka Gardens.

Malta's Grand Harbour has been welcoming and dispatching ships for longer than almost anywhere else in the Mediterranean, its deep natural anchorage sheltering everything from Knights-era galleys to modern container vessels over the centuries.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few offshore sailing races anywhere combine a course of such varied and dramatic geography with a start location as visually striking as Malta's Grand Harbour, where competing yachts depart past bastions, forts and centuries-old fortifications before facing an open-water course that passes an active volcano at Stromboli and skirts the coastline of Sicily

02

The mystery stays covered

Now in its fifth decade, the race has built a reputation as one of the classic offshore courses in international sailing, drawing competitive crews specifically for the combination of demanding conditions and historic Mediterranean scenery
