Santa Marija Feast Gudja in Gudja
Gudja celebrates Santa Marija, the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, on 15 August alongside six other Maltese and Gozitan towns. The parish church, completed in 1666 with three bell towers, houses the oldest titular Assumption statue in Malta, carved in solid wood in 1807, which is carried through decorated streets after Solemn Mass and preceded and followed by fireworks and band marches.
Gudja is a small village near Malta's international airport, its quiet streets an unlikely setting for one of the island's more historically significant religious statues.
