The story

Malta Marathon in Mdina to Sliema

The Malta Marathon starts outside the fortified walls of Mdina, Malta's medieval former capital, and finishes in the seaside resort town of Sliema, with the 41st edition held on 22 February 2026. The predominantly downhill course, dropping from 195 metres to sea level, passes through Rabat, Ta' Qali, Attard, Mosta, Birkirkara and along Malta's harbour-side waterfronts before the finish.

Mdina has been a fortified settlement since long before Malta's modern history began, serving as the island's capital under successive rulers before the Knights of St John shifted the centre of power to newly built Valletta.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Starting a marathon outside the walls of Mdina, a genuinely medieval fortified city that predates the Knights of St John's arrival in Malta, gives the race a historic opening unlike most urban marathons worldwide, runners setting off beneath centuries-old bastions before the course drops toward the sea

02

The mystery stays covered

The predominantly downhill elevation profile, falling nearly 200 metres over the full distance, also makes it an attractive course for runners chasing a faster time, while the final five kilometres along the yacht-lined waterfronts of Sa Maison, Pieta, Msida, Ta' Xbiex and Gzira give the finish a genuinely scenic Mediterranean character
