Feast of Santa Marija Mosta in Mosta
The Feast of Santa Marija, celebrated on 15 August in Mosta, marks the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and centres on the town's Rotunda, one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. The feast combines a grand statue procession, extensive decoration of the church and streets, band marches and fireworks, and is inseparably linked to the Rotunda's own history, including a bomb that fell through its dome during a Second World War Mass without exploding.
The Mosta Rotunda dominates the town's skyline and much of central Malta's, its dome ranking among the largest unsupported domes in the world and drawing comparisons to St Peter's Basilica and the Pantheon in Rome.
