The Malta Jazz Festival has run in Valletta since 1990, staged outdoors beside Our Lady of Liesse Church on the waterfront, with the city's illuminated bastions rising behind the stage and the Grand Harbour stretching in front. It focuses squarely on jazz across its many contemporary and historic forms, avoiding pop crossover acts in favour of serious improvisational programming.

Before Malta had an international jazz festival, it had Strait Street, the narrow lane running through Valletta that earned the nickname 'the Gut' for the bars, dance halls and nightclubs that lined it during the decades when the Royal Navy kept a major base in the Grand Harbour.
