The story

La Valette Marathon in Valletta/coastal route

Held each March since 2022, the La Valette Marathon is Malta's only AIMS-certified marathon and half-marathon, running an entirely coastal route from Sliema's waterfront to the Freedom Monument in Vittoriosa. Six formats, including the full marathon, half-marathon, 10km, 5km, a relay and a walkathon, take runners past Fort Saint Elmo and Fort Saint Angelo with the Mediterranean on one side and centuries-old fortifications on the other.

Malta's coastline has been shaped for centuries by the defensive needs of the Knights of St John, whose forts and bastions still ring the Grand Harbour and its approaches.
