The story

Valletta Early Opera Festival in Valletta

The Valletta Early Opera Festival stages rarely performed works from the early opera canon at Teatru Manoel, Europe's oldest continuously working theatre, dating to 1731. Under artistic director Kenneth Zammit Tabona, recent editions have included Mozart's teenage opera Il Re Pastore, led by conductor Giulio Prandi, alongside an international cast and creative team.

Teatru Manoel opened its doors in 1731, commissioned by Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena to give Valletta a proper theatre of its own, and it has operated continuously ever since, making it one of the oldest working theatres anywhere in Europe.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's specific focus on early opera, works that fell out of standard repertoire and are rarely staged even by major international opera houses, gives it a genuinely distinctive niche within Europe's crowded opera festival landscape

02

The mystery stays covered

Performing that repertoire inside Teatru Manoel, a theatre that has hosted live performance continuously since 1731 and predates most of the operas themselves by only a matter of decades in some cases, creates an unusually authentic historical match between venue and material rarely available elsewhere
