Festival Nomade de Mauritanie in Atar/Chinguetti
Festival Nomade de Mauritanie is an annual celebration of nomadic Saharan culture held in January or February, bringing together nomads for dance, song, gastronomy, and literature. Programming includes horse and camel races, storytellers and musicians, traditional nomadic cuisine, and guided hiking or camel excursions retracing historic caravan routes through the Adrar region around Atar and Chinguetti.
In the dry, dramatic landscape of Mauritania's Adrar region, where the towns of Atar and Chinguetti sit at the edge of some of the Sahara's most striking dune fields and plateau country, the Festival Nomade de Mauritanie gathers each January or February to celebrate a way of life shaped almost entirely by the desert itself.
