Festival des Cites du Patrimoine in Ouadane
Festival des Cites du Patrimoine, formerly the Festival des Villes Anciennes, celebrates Mauritania's UNESCO World Heritage caravan cities, Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt, and Oualata. Organized by the Mauritanian state for over a decade and rotating among the historic towns, it shifted from an annual to a biennial event after its 10th edition in December 2021, with the 14th edition planned for December 19-23 in Ouadane, combining scientific conferences on the cities' history and desert trade networks.
Deep in Mauritania's desert interior stand four towns that once anchored trans-Saharan trade routes: Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt, and Oualata, each recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for the caravan-era architecture and history they preserve.
