Festival de Oualata in Oualata
Festival de Oualata is Oualata's staging of the rotating Festival des Cites du Patrimoine, held in this UNESCO World Heritage town in southeastern Mauritania's Hodh Echarghi region, nicknamed the shore of eternity by fifteenth-century caravan traders. The 12th edition, held December 8 to 12, 2023, drew several thousand visitors under the supervision of the President of Mauritania.
Fifteenth-century caravan traders crossing the eastern reaches of the Sahara toward what is now Mali gave Oualata a nickname that has outlasted the trade routes themselves: the shore of eternity, a fitting description for a town that marked travelers' last significant stop before vast, open desert.
