The story

Festival Wolof de Rosso in Rosso

This corresponds to the Festival du Waalo, organized by the Association for the Promotion of the Wolof Language in Mauritania, APROLAWO.RIM. Its first edition ran August 6 to 7, 2016 in Rosso, dedicated to the history and heritage of the Wolof people of the Waalo region, with later editions in 2019 and 2024.

In August 2016, the Association for the Promotion of the Wolof Language in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, known by its acronym APROLAWO.RIM, staged the first edition of what it called the Festival du Waalo in the river town of Rosso, fulfilling a commitment the organization had made at its founding congress in Nouakchott the previous year.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is unusual for combining explicit historical and political content with celebration: its programming has included conferences specifically addressing Waalo's resistance to French colonization and the men and women who led it, giving the event a documented commemorative and educational purpose beyond entertainment

02

The mystery stays covered

Organized by a dedicated language-promotion association, APROLAWO

03

The city starts moving

RIM, formed with the explicit mission of restoring and promoting Wolof cultural heritage, the festival represents a grassroots community effort rather than a state-run cultural program

04

The water draws everyone in

Its inclusion of traditional sports, notably canoe races, ties the festival directly to Rosso's location on the Senegal River, a geography central to Wolof Waalo identity and history
