Festival de Tichitt in Tichitt
Festival de Tichitt is Tichitt's staging of the rotating Festival des Cites du Patrimoine. Located roughly 850 kilometers east of Nouakchott, Tichitt is one of Mauritania's four UNESCO World Heritage caravan towns, known for its distinctive stone architecture and significant collections of Arabic-Muslim manuscripts, with the festival honoring its historic role in Islamic scholarship and trans-Saharan trade.
Of the four ancient caravan towns that take turns hosting Mauritania's Festival des Cites du Patrimoine, Tichitt is the one fewest outsiders will ever see under any circumstances.
