The story

Ulama Traditional Ballgame Sinaloa in Mazatlan / Sinaloa communities

Ulama is a descendant of the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame, played continuously in a handful of Sinaloa communities and regarded as one of the oldest continuously played sports in the world, using a solid rubber ball whose predecessors date back roughly 3,600 years. Suppressed after the Spanish conquest for its religious associations, the game survived specifically in Sinaloa, where Spanish influence was historically weaker, and today experiences a modest organized revival through associations in Mexico, the United States and Belize.

Archaeologists have found rubber balls in Mesoamerica dating to roughly 1600 BC, ballgamer figurines from around 1200 BC, and evidence of nearly 1,500 ancient ball courts spread across a region stretching from modern Mexico to El Salvador.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Ulama connects present-day players directly to a sport whose roots trace back at least to 1600 BC, making it, by a wide margin, one of the oldest continuously practiced ball games on Earth, older than most recognizable sports played anywhere in the world today

02

The mystery stays covered

Three distinct modern forms survive, ulama de cadera, played hip-to-ball by teams wearing protective loincloths against a heavy rubber ball, ulama de antebrazo, played with the forearm on a smaller field and often taken up by women, and ulama de mazo, played with a heavy two-handed wooden paddle, each preserving a different technical approach to a game whose ancestral version was closely tied to Aztec and broader Mesoamerican religious ritual
