The story

DescOpera Open Air Festival in Butuceni/Orheiul Vechi

DescOpera brings opera and classical music into the limestone amphitheater of Orheiul Vechi, staging performances in the village of Butuceni each year since 2016. The 2026 edition, marking its tenth anniversary, runs June 18 to 21 and opens with a preview of Rossini's The Barber of Seville performed by the Bucharest National Opera, drawing more than 5,000 visitors to a reserve better known for its monasteries and cliffside scenery.

Orheiul Vechi has drawn visitors for its cave monasteries and limestone cliffs long before anyone thought to stage an opera there, but since 2016 the reserve's natural amphitheater beneath those same cliffs has doubled as a concert venue every June.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

DescOpera's defining feature is its setting: rather than staging opera in a conventional concert hall, organizers, working under Moldova's Ministry of Culture, bring full productions into a natural amphitheater formed by the limestone cliffs surrounding Butuceni, inside the Orheiul Vechi cultural and natural reserve

02

The mystery stays covered

That backdrop, already one of Moldova's most visited historic and natural landscapes, gives classical music an outdoor scale rarely available to opera audiences

03

The city starts moving

Now in its tenth year as of 2026, the festival has grown into a fixture that draws more than 5,000 visitors annually, with the 2026 program opening with a preview of Rossini's The Barber of Seville from the Bucharest National Opera, pairing a milestone anniversary with a partnership that brings Romanian operatic talent directly to a Moldovan village
