The story

Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo

The Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix has run through Monte Carlo's streets since 1929, when it began under the honorary presidency of Prince Louis II and Automobile Club de Monaco's organization. Held annually each late May on the tight 3.337 kilometre Circuit de Monaco, it is the slowest, narrowest track on the calendar and part of motorsport's unofficial Triple Crown alongside the Indianapolis 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Monaco Grand Prix predates the modern Formula 1 World Championship by more than two decades.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

No other race on the calendar asks drivers to thread modern Formula 1 cars through streets barely wide enough for the job, past the harbor, around Casino Square, and into a tunnel that turns daylight to shadow mid-lap

02

The mystery stays covered

Because average speeds are so low, the race distance is trimmed to 260 kilometres instead of the usual 305, yet it remains the result every driver wants more than almost any other

03

The city starts moving

Ayrton Senna's six wins stand as the all-time record, while Graham Hill earned the nickname Mr Monaco for his dominance through the 1960s and 1970s

04

The water draws everyone in

In the weeks before the race, the town itself becomes part of the spectacle: streets close, harborside grandstands rise, and superyachts anchor offshore so their owners can watch the cars pass below
