The story

Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival in Monte Carlo

Under the high patronage of Prince Albert II, the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival has filled the Opera Garnier Monte-Carlo each November since 2006 with jazz and adjacent genres performed inside a nineteenth-century opera house. The 2025 edition, its nineteenth, ran November 20 through 29 and has hosted artists including Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, and Gregory Porter across its history.

The Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival launched in 2006 under the high patronage of Prince Albert II, choosing a venue that no other major jazz festival could claim: the Salle Garnier, Monaco's nineteenth-century opera house, designed by the same architect responsible for the Paris Opera.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The setting alone separates this festival from most jazz calendars: performances happen inside the gilded Salle Garnier, a nineteenth-century opera house built for orchestral grandeur, not an improvised piano run, and that friction between ornate architecture and improvisation becomes part of the draw

02

The mystery stays covered

The artist roster over nearly two decades reads like a shortlist of jazz's most significant living figures, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Diana Krall, Melody Gardot, and Ibrahim Maalouf among them, performing in a room built for a few hundred rather than an arena crowd

03

The city starts moving

Beyond the main stage, Before and After events at the Casino de Monte-Carlo's Cafe de la Rotonde extend each evening into looser, late-night sessions, while jazz-related film screenings round out a program built for serious listeners
