Steppe Winter Horses Festival in Khentii
Steppe Winter Horses Festival gathers more than 2,000 horses and their trainers each November in Batnorow village, Khentii Province, to celebrate the skills of Mongolian winter horsemanship. Running since 2015, the festival features races, horse-lassoing, taiga dog racing, wild-horse taming, wrestling and the distinctive Silken Hoof race, drawing herders from as far as Inner Mongolia, China, to compete in sub-zero conditions.
Khentii Province is closely associated with Mongolia's horse culture, but most visitors picture that culture in its summer form, the horse races of Naadam, run across open green steppe in July.
