Golden Eagle Festival in Olgii
The Golden Eagle Festival in Olgii celebrates Kazakh eagle-hunting (burkitshi) traditions in Bayan-Olgii Province, organized by the Mongolian Eagle Hunters' Association. The main October festival hosts up to 80 hunters, with two smaller September editions drawing up to 40 each, as hunters and their golden eagles compete in speed, agility and accuracy categories alongside displays of traditional Kazakh dress and horsemanship.
In the mountains of Bayan-Olgii Province, in Mongolia's far west, a small community of Kazakh hunters keeps alive one of the world's oldest working relationships between human and bird of prey.
