The story

Asia Folk Festival in Ulaanbaatar

Asia Folk Festival fills Ulaanbaatar's Sukhbaatar Square each June with folk performers, costumed parades and handicraft vendors from across Asia. Held under the patronage of Mongolia's Prime Minister and licensed by the World Association of Folklore Festivals, the 2025 edition brought together around 170 artists from 11 countries, including Japan, South Korea, India, Vietnam, China and Uzbekistan, for a shared celebration of regional folklore and craft.

Sukhbaatar Square sits at the civic heart of Ulaanbaatar, flanked by government buildings and dominated by a monumental statue of Chinggis Khaan, and for most of the year it functions as formal public space, host to state ceremonies and everyday city life.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's distinguishing feature is its explicitly pan-Asian scope: rather than showcasing a single national tradition, it invites folklore ensembles from across the continent to perform side by side in the same square

02

The mystery stays covered

Organized by the ArtLar Culture NGO under an official license from the World Association of Folklore Festivals, it carries international accreditation that ties Ulaanbaatar into a global network of folk-arts events

03

The city starts moving

Since its 2019 launch it has operated under the patronage of Mongolia's Prime Minister, giving it a level of state visibility unusual for a folk-culture gathering

04

The water draws everyone in

The 2025 edition drew about 170 artists from 11 countries, among them Japan, South Korea, India, Vietnam, China and Uzbekistan, performing folk dance and music, parading in costume and selling handicrafts, turning Ulaanbaatar into a cross-section of Asian folk culture
