The story

Playtime Festival in Ulaanbaatar

Playtime Festival is Mongolia's largest and longest-running annual music festival, founded in 2002 by Natsagdorj George Tserendorj. Held the weekend before Naadam at Playtime Field in Nalaikh, on the edge of Ulaanbaatar, the multi-day event brings together rock, pop, indie, hip-hop, metal and electronic acts from Mongolia and abroad, alongside morin khuur and throat-singing performances, art installations, workshops and an artisan market.

Every July, a stretch of open ground at Playtime Field in Nalaikh, just outside Ulaanbaatar, fills with stages, tents and crowds for Mongolia's largest and longest-running annual music festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Playtime's defining trait is its longevity and scale: it has run since 2002, making it the senior fixture of Mongolia's modern festival calendar, and it consistently draws the country's biggest lineup of homegrown and touring rock, pop, indie, hip-hop, metal and electronic acts

02

The mystery stays covered

Its timing, the weekend before Naadam, turns it into an unofficial curtain-raiser for Mongolia's biggest national holiday, so visitors can pair contemporary Mongolian music culture with the older performing traditions of morin khuur (horsehead fiddle) and throat singing on the same grounds

03

The city starts moving

The Nalaikh site outside the capital gives the festival room for camping-style crowds, art installations, craft workshops and an artisan market alongside the stages, rather than a single indoor venue
