The story

Ulaanbaatar Winter Festival in Ulaanbaatar

The Ulaanbaatar Winter Festival is an annual mid-February event, the 14th edition ran February 15-16, 2025 at Sky Resort and National Garden Park, designed to extend Mongolia's tourism season into winter through extreme sports demonstrations, ice sculpture displays and heritage exhibits. The 2026 edition emphasized adventure tourism with an International Ice Archery Championship drawing over 1,000 athletes from Ulaanbaatar, 21 provinces, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Buryatia.

Every mid-February, when Ulaanbaatar's temperatures regularly drop to minus 20 or minus 30 degrees Celsius and much of the world assumes travel to Mongolia is impossible, the Ulaanbaatar Winter Festival makes the opposite argument: that winter is when the country's landscape and skills are most worth seeing.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This festival was built specifically to solve a tourism problem: Mongolia's visitor season traditionally concentrates around summer Naadam, leaving winter, when the country's cold and snowy landscape is arguably at its most dramatic, comparatively empty of organized events

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival answers that gap with extreme sports demonstrations and ice sculpture displays at Sky Resort and National Garden Park, alongside heritage exhibits on nomadic lifestyle, costume and cuisine that give visitors cultural context alongside the winter activities

03

The city starts moving

Its 2026 edition scaled up the international angle sharply, with an International Ice Archery Championship drawing more than 1,000 athletes from Ulaanbaatar, 21 provinces, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Buryatia, turning a domestic tourism initiative into a genuinely cross-border winter sports event
