The story

Timitar Festival in Agadir

Timitar Festival has placed Amazigh, or Berber, culture at the center of an international musical exchange since the Timitar Association launched it in 2004 in Agadir. Held every July at Place Al Amal and Theatre de Verdure with every performance free, the festival's lineup spans chaabi, Amazigh folk, gnawa, Arab music, African rhythms, and Moroccan pop, drawing crowds that have topped 800,000 across expanded editions.

Amazigh, or Berber, culture predates the modern Moroccan state by millennia, yet for much of the twentieth century it rarely occupied center stage in the country's major cultural events.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Timitar's founding motto, Amazigh artists welcome the artists of the world, captures its core inversion of the usual festival hierarchy: rather than importing international headliners as the main draw with local acts in support, Timitar positions Amazigh culture as host and center, inviting global musicians into that framework instead

02

The mystery stays covered

Making every performance completely free removes the usual economic barrier that keeps large festivals from reaching their full potential local audience, which helps explain attendance figures that have surpassed 800,000 in peak years, with more than 400 artists performing across multiple simultaneous stages

03

The city starts moving

That scale, achieved without ticket sales, reflects genuine grassroots reach rather than a festival built primarily for a paying, self-selecting crowd, giving Timitar a claim to being one of the most attended free music festivals anywhere in Africa
