Each June, Fes turns its ancient medina and royal grounds into a stage for devotional music from across the world, gathering Muslim, Christian, and other faith traditions in shared performance. Founded in 1994 in the wake of the first Gulf War, the roughly ten-day festival pairs concerts with public forums on faith and coexistence, and in 2001 the United Nations cited it among the most outstanding events fostering dialogue among civilizations.

In the early 1990s, as the first Gulf War fractured global politics along religious and cultural lines, a small group in Fes decided that music, not diplomacy, might be the more honest place to rebuild dialogue.
