The story

International Nomads Festival in Mhamid El Ghizlane

The International Nomads Festival gathers at M'hamid El Ghizlane, one of the last outposts before the Moroccan Sahara, celebrating nomadic culture through conferences, crafts, and performance. Founded in 2004 by the Association Nomades du Monde, the 2026 edition, its 21st, ran April 3-5 with round tables on architecture, ecology, and agriculture alongside weaving, storytelling, poetry, song, and dance from local, regional, and international artists.

At the edge of M'hamid El Ghizlane, where paved road gives way to the tracks that lead into the Moroccan Sahara, the Association Nomades du Monde chose in 2004 to build a festival around a way of life that modern infrastructure and settlement patterns were steadily eroding.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This festival treats nomadic life as a subject worth serious study, not just a scenic backdrop for tourism

02

The mystery stays covered

Round tables bring together specialists discussing architectural heritage, desert flora and fauna, environmental protection, health, education, and agriculture, giving the event an intellectual weight unusual for a desert gathering built around music and craft

03

The city starts moving

That academic layer sits directly alongside sculpture, painting, weaving, and storytelling performed by artists ranging from local Sahrawi and Amazigh communities to international guests, so the festival functions simultaneously as a conference and a living showcase of the culture it studies

04

The water draws everyone in

Its location at the edge of the Sahara reinforces the theme: this is where settled life gives way to nomadic routes, captured in its own framing as a great caravan of perpetual rhythms
