The story

Taragalte Festival in Mhamid El Ghizlane

The Taragalte Festival takes place each autumn in the dunes near M'hamid El Ghizlane, at the far end of Morocco's Draa Valley, celebrating Saharan and Amazigh nomadic culture. Founded in 2009 by a local family alongside the village community, the three-day open-air gathering brings together Gnawa musicians, Amazigh singers, poets and craftspeople. The 2025 edition ran October 31 through November 2.

M'hamid El Ghizlane marks the point where the paved road runs out and the Sahara properly begins, the last town of any size before the dunes stretch toward Mali and Mauritania.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Taragalte stands out for its intimacy and its roots: rather than a festival imported for tourism, it grew directly out of M'hamid El Ghizlane's own nomadic families and community organizers, who built it in 2009 to keep desert traditions visible and economically viable

02

The mystery stays covered

Musically, it centers hypnotic Gnawa rhythms, desert blues and Amazigh song, performed in dune camps rather than fixed venues

03

The city starts moving

The festival is also conceived as part of the Caravan of Peace, a wider effort connecting desert communities and musicians across Morocco, Mali and Mauritania around shared themes of heritage, tolerance and protecting fragile dune ecosystems, alongside craft markets, poetry and storytelling sessions
