Safi Aita Festival in Safi
The National Festival of Aita Art gathers in Safi, the Moroccan city most closely associated with Aita, a traditional rural musical style sung by women known as shikhat over fiddle and drum accompaniment. Organized by the Ministry of Culture and Communication with the Safi municipality, the 24th edition ran under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI, combining concerts, conferences and workshops.
Aita is one of Morocco's most emotionally direct musical traditions, a rural genre built around powerful, often improvised vocal lines sung in Moroccan Arabic.
