The story

Moussem of Tan-Tan in Tan-Tan

The Moussem of Tan-Tan is a gathering of Sahrawi and southern Moroccan nomadic tribes held in Tan-Tan, southwestern Morocco, since 1963. More than thirty tribes come together to celebrate oral heritage, traditional music, handicrafts and centuries-old customs, an event revived in 2004 after a period of suspension and inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.

The Moussem of Tan-Tan traces its origins to 1963, when it was established as a gathering point for the nomadic tribes of southern Morocco and northwest Africa, a place where oral heritage, animal husbandry and craft traditions could be preserved and passed on collectively rather than fading as individual tribes dispersed across the desert.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What makes the Moussem of Tan-Tan remarkable is its scale as a living record of nomadic culture rather than a staged reenactment: more than thirty tribes from southern Morocco and northwest Africa converge with their own camels, horses, tents and oral traditions intact

02

The mystery stays covered

Camel and horse breeding competitions sit alongside traditional weddings held on-site, herbalist consultations drawing on generations of desert medicinal knowledge, and poetry competitions conducted in the Hassanie oral tradition, a literary form specific to the region's nomadic communities

03

The city starts moving

Banned in 1979 amid security concerns and revived only in 2004 with UNESCO and Moroccan Ministry of Tourism backing, the event carries the weight of a tradition that nearly disappeared and was deliberately brought back, a history that gives its 2008 UNESCO inscription particular significance
