The story

KINANI - International Contemporary Dance Festival in Maputo

Kinani is Mozambique's biennial international contemporary dance festival, based in Maputo and marking two decades of activity. Held over roughly a week, it pairs Mozambican choreographers with visiting artists from across Africa, Europe and South America, staging new work in theatres, cultural centres and unconventional public sites around the capital.

Kinani grew out of Maputo's small but internationally connected contemporary dance scene, where a handful of choreographers spent the 2000s building companies, touring festivals abroad, and slowly constructing local infrastructure for a genre that had almost no formal home in the city.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Kinani has built its reputation by refusing to keep dance inside conventional theatres

02

The mystery stays covered

Recent editions have staged premieres in the chapel of the closed Sao Francisco Xavier (Ronil) Cemetery, the former Correios de Mocambique post office building, and the outlying neighbourhood of Polana Caniço, deliberately moving performances away from Maputo's downtown venues and into sites layered with colonial and everyday history

03

The city starts moving

Programming mixes solo and ensemble works from Mozambican and international choreographers, giving local dancers a rare platform to share billing with visiting companies from South Africa, Norway and Brazil, and positioning the festival among the more significant contemporary dance events on the African continent

Living ritual

Staging performances in a decommissioned colonial-era cemetery chapel and in outlying neighbourhoods reflects a broader practice among Mozambican contemporary artists of using sites tied to colonial or everyday urban history as active performance spaces rather than neutral backdrops
