Gwaza Muthini is an annual commemoration held in Marracuene, in Maputo province, marking the Battle of Marracuene of 2 February 1895, when Tsonga and Ronga warriors serving under regional chiefs resisted Portuguese colonial forces during the final campaigns against the Gaza Empire. The gathering combines ceremony with traditional dance and music, drawing local authorities, elders, and residents to honor the battle's fighters.

In the closing years of the nineteenth century, Portugal moved to convert its long-claimed but loosely held territory in southern Mozambique into an administered colony, pressing military campaigns against the Gaza Empire ruled by Ngungunyane.
