Kalaw Thingyan Festival in Kalaw
Kalaw's Thingyan is the hill town's observance of Myanmar's nationwide mid-April New Year Water Festival rather than a separate event in its own right. Water-splashing pavilions and entertainment stages go up alongside those of nearby Shan State towns, including Taunggyi, Inlay, Aungban, Pindaya, Tachileik and Kengtung, but Kalaw's cooler climate and small-town scale give its five-day celebration a more local, community-oriented character.
Thingyan, the nationwide Water Festival marking the Burmese New Year in mid-April, is celebrated in Kalaw much as it is celebrated across the rest of Myanmar: five days of water-throwing, music pavilions and communal festivity intended to wash away the old year before it turns.
