Kengtung Thingyan Festival in Kengtung
Kengtung's Thingyan celebration marks Myanmar's mid-April New Year in the hills of eastern Shan State, where residents gather around Naung Tung Lake in the town center for days of water throwing, music and merit-making. Local tradition traces the festival's origin to a severe drought and brushfires that struck the area in 1410, with the water festival that followed becoming an enduring local practice ever since.
Long before Kengtung became a stop on Myanmar's tourist trail through Shan State, it was already marking its New Year with water.
