Mandalay Thingyan Festival in Mandalay
Mandalay's Walking Thingyan centers on a procession around the city's historic moat, with dozens of pavilions offering traditional dance and food. The 2026 edition is planned on an especially grand scale after the 2025 Mandalay earthquake forced the previous year's festival to be cancelled, with dedicated pavilions for Myanmar's eight major ethnic groups and photography competitions spotlighting laphet and thanaka traditions.
Mandalay's version of Myanmar's mid-April New Year festival takes its shape from the city's most distinctive feature: the wide moat that still circles the site of the former royal palace.
