The story

Grand Inlay Floating Thingyan Festival in Nyaungshwe

The Grand Inlay Floating Thingyan Festival is a lake-based celebration of Myanmar New Year held on Inle Lake in Nyaungshwe township, Shan State. It pairs traditional water-splashing carried out from boats and rafts with rice alms offerings to monks, Dhamma talks, Thingyan dance performances and ethnic dance competitions running from Thingyan eve through New Year's Day.

On most of Inle Lake, life moves by boat, and when Myanmar's biggest holiday arrives each April, Nyaungshwe township has found its own way to celebrate it on the water.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes this festival from Thingyan celebrations elsewhere in Myanmar is its setting: rather than splashing water on city streets, celebrants take to Inle Lake itself, throwing water from boats and rafts in a floating version of the national new year tradition

02

The mystery stays covered

That waterborne format turns Nyaungshwe township into a distinctive stage for the festival, combining the region's iconic lake scenery with Thingyan's customary mix of play and merit-making

03

The city starts moving

The program also folds in early-year rice alms offerings to monks, Dhamma talks and Thingyan dance performances, alongside competitions among Shan State's ethnic dance traditions

04

The water draws everyone in

First held in 2019 and suspended from 2020 to 2022 during the pandemic, the festival resumed in 2023 and has since become an increasingly prominent draw for tourism around Inle Lake
