Taung Pyone Spirit Festival in Taung Pyone
The Taung Pyone Nat Festival is Myanmar's largest annual spirit festival, held each August in the village of Taung Pyone near Mandalay. It honors the Taungbyone Brothers, Min Gyi and Min Lay, the most widely venerated of the thirty-seven officially recognized nats. Across three days, mediums and worshippers summon, feast with and bid farewell to the spirits amid circus acts, cultural dances, music, magic shows and fortune-telling.
Myanmar's Buddhist calendar is dotted with pagoda festivals, but running alongside it, and predating it in many respects, is a separate and equally living tradition of nat worship, the veneration of spirits believed to hold power over specific places, families or fortunes.
