Taunggyi Thingyan Festival in Taunggyi
Taunggyi's Thingyan is the Shan State capital's version of Myanmar's nationwide mid-April New Year Water Festival, rather than a fully separate event. Its distinguishing feature is the Walking Thingyan procession along Bogyoke Aung San Road, where officials and residents pour water over and give cash to touring Yein dance troupes performing at pavilions set up around the city.
Thingyan, Myanmar's nationwide New Year Water Festival, unfolds in mid-April in every city and town across the country, and Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State, celebrates it in essentially the same way as the rest of Myanmar: days of water-throwing, music, merit-making and street celebration marking the turn of the Burmese calendar year.
