Angam Day Celebrations in Nationwide

Angam Day, celebrated nationwide every October 26, marks the moments Nauru's small population recovered from near-extinction, first in 1932 and again in 1949. The Nauruan word angam means jubilation or triumph over hardship, and the day remains one of the country's most emotionally significant national holidays.

In 1919, in the aftermath of World War I, Australian administrator Brigadier-General Thomas Griffiths held a census of Nauru and met with the island's chiefs to deliver an alarming assessment: the Nauruan population had fallen so low that the survival of the Nauruan people as a distinct group was in question.
