The story

Angam Day Celebrations in Nationwide

Angam Day, celebrated nationwide every October 26, marks the moments Nauru's small population recovered from near-extinction, first in 1932 and again in 1949. The Nauruan word angam means jubilation or triumph over hardship, and the day remains one of the country's most emotionally significant national holidays.

In 1919, in the aftermath of World War I, Australian administrator Brigadier-General Thomas Griffiths held a census of Nauru and met with the island's chiefs to deliver an alarming assessment: the Nauruan population had fallen so low that the survival of the Nauruan people as a distinct group was in question.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few national holidays anywhere are built around a population threshold the way Angam Day is

02

The mystery stays covered

In 1919, Australian administrator Brigadier-General Thomas Griffiths and Nauru's chiefs determined that 1,500 people was the minimum population needed for the Nauruan people to survive as a distinct group, and declared that whenever that number was reached, it would become a permanent annual holiday

03

The city starts moving

The first Angam came in 1932 after thirteen years of population growth

04

The water draws everyone in

a second Angam followed in 1949, after the Nauruan population was again driven toward the threshold by World War II deportation and death on Truk island, making the holiday a direct, continuing marker of Nauruan survival across two separate historical crises
