Bungamati Festival in Bungamati

The Bungamati Festival centers on the Newar village of Bungamati, hometown of the deity Rato Machhindranath, whose large shikhara-style temple stands at the village square. Every twelve years the deity's chariot is built here instead of Patan, making Bungamati the ceremonial heart of the valley's rain-god tradition.

On a spur of land overlooking the Bagmati River, the village of Bungamati has existed under one name or another since before the Christian era, when it was known as Bugayumigrama in the language of the Kirati people who first settled there.
