Maghe Sankranti Nepal in Devghat/Nationwide

Maghe Sankranti, observed on the first of Magh, typically January 14, marks the winter solstice's end and is one of the few major Nepali festivals fixed to the solar calendar rather than the lunar one. Hindus take ritual baths at sacred river confluences nationwide, including Devghat, while sesame, ghee and sweet potato are eaten and nieces and nephews visit maternal relatives for blessings.

Maghe Sankranti marks the sun's entry into Capricorn, Makara in Sanskrit astronomy, a solar transition that in Nepal, as across much of South Asia, is treated as the turning point from a dark, contracting season into one of lengthening days and returning warmth.
