Chhath Parva is a demanding multi-day Hindu festival honoring Surya, the sun god, and Chhathi Maiya, observed with rigorous fasting and paired evening and dawn offerings at riverbanks and ponds. Janakpur in Nepal's southeastern Terai draws especially large crowds of devoted pilgrims to its rivers and ponds.

In the days following the main Tihar season, as the Terai's rivers and ponds settle into the cooler months, one of Nepal's most physically demanding religious observances takes hold.
