Rato Machindranath Rath Yatra is Nepal's longest-running chariot festival, held in Lalitpur (Patan) over roughly a month as a towering wooden chariot, built without a single nail, is slowly hauled through the old city's neighborhoods to honor Machindranath, protector of rain and good harvest, closing with the Bhoto Jatra ceremony.

For centuries, the people of Patan, one of the three ancient royal cities of the Kathmandu Valley, have marked the turn from the dry season to the monsoon with a chariot that takes longer to build, decorate, and haul than almost any other in Nepal.
