Matsyendranath Snan Festival in Patan
The Matsyendranath Snan Festival is a ritual bathing ceremony for the deity Rato Machhindranath, patron god of the Kathmandu Valley, held in Patan ahead of the much larger chariot procession dedicated to him. The bathing rite readies the deity's image for public display and worship.
Before Rato Machhindranath's chariot rolls through the streets of Lalitpur each year, on a journey that can last a month, the deity's image undergoes a quieter, more private ritual: a ceremonial bath.
