Sindoor Jatra in Thimi
Sindoor Jatra is Thimi's signature vermillion-throwing celebration, held as part of the town's Bisket Jatra new year observance. Multiple neighborhood Ganesh chariots converge near the Bal Kumari temple before crowds throw and smear red sindoor powder over the chariots, the deities and each other in a dense burst of color.
Sindoor, the fine red vermillion powder used across Hindu practice to mark foreheads with tika or, for married women, to color the parting of the hair as a sign of marital status, is ordinarily applied with restraint, a small pinch pressed carefully onto skin or scalp.
