The story

Amsterdam Winter Paradise in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Winter Paradise transforms Museumplein, in front of the Rijksmuseum, into a large outdoor ice-skating rink and winter market each December into January. The seasonal attraction combines skating with food and drink stalls, seating areas and holiday lighting, giving the museum-district square a festive winter identity through the darkest weeks of the year.

Each winter, as the days shorten toward the darkest point of the year, Museumplein, the grand square fronting Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, sheds its usual identity as a museum forecourt and open lawn and becomes Amsterdam Winter Paradise, an outdoor ice rink and winter market that runs from early December into mid-January.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Amsterdam Winter Paradise makes use of one of the city's most architecturally significant public spaces, placing its ice rink and winter market directly in front of the Rijksmuseum on Museumplein, a setting few winter attractions anywhere can match for sheer visual grandeur

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than a standalone rink, the event builds a broader seasonal environment around the ice itself, with food and drink stalls, covered seating and decorative lighting turning the square into a destination for a full evening rather than a quick skate

03

The city starts moving

Its central location within Amsterdam's museum district means the attraction sits within easy walking distance of the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Vondelpark, letting visitors combine a day of culture with an evening of seasonal outdoor recreation
