The story

Grachtenfestival Amsterdam in Amsterdam

Grachtenfestival, the Amsterdam Canal Festival, fills the city with more than one hundred classical and jazz concerts over ten days each August, staged in unusual venues from canal houses and churches to rooftops and industrial sites. The 2026 edition runs August 7 to 16, and the festival is closely associated with, though organizationally separate from, the free floating-stage Prinsengrachtconcert first held in 1982.

Amsterdam's relationship between classical music and its canals predates the Grachtenfestival itself.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Grachtenfestival's defining feature is its refusal to confine classical and jazz performance to conventional concert halls: over its ten-day run it stages concerts in canal-house period rooms, churches, rooftop terraces, industrial buildings, cruise ships, hotel suites and museums, treating unusual Amsterdam spaces as part of each concert's character

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival has built talent development into its structure through a Conservatorium Concours for classical students and, since 2021, a Jazz Competition, with each year's winner becoming the following year's Artist in Residence

03

The city starts moving

The festival's flagship associated event, the free Prinsengrachtconcert, staged on a floating pontoon in front of Hotel Pulitzer since 1982 and broadcast on Dutch television, draws its own crowd along the canal in small boats, a spectacle distinct from, but closely tied to, the wider program
